The common method of chem-dry process or dry-wash with foam and a sponge is not only the wrong way of cleaning your silk rug; it is a recipe for destruction of its fibers. The chemical residue or the foam will get absorbed by the silk fiber and the foundation of the rug (wefts & warps). This over time will dry up the silk rug and cause brittleness and cracking which destroys the rug and its value.

Typically there are two problems for washing silk rugs. First, older rugs have been dried up due to the chem-dry process or lack of wash for many years and the fibers are very hard. The second issue is the new silk rugs, where the biggest problem is the color run upon exposure to water. We study each rug and determine the country of origin and the specific province where it was made. Accordingly, we decide the appropriate process to properly wash and treat the rug. For example, Persian silk rug is mostly made with 100% natural silk and requires extreme expertise when washed with water. Chinese silk rug can be natural silk too; however, most recently the new fibers are woven out of cotton resembling silk. It requires a complete different process than of natural silk or it will fade.
Turkish silk rugs do not have the danger of color run, but, if not washed properly it will dry and feel like a block of lumber. That is when the rug will eventually crack like a biscuit! Regardless of what type of silk rug, we have cleaned them from antiques to attic finds.
