When Your Rug is A Work of Art: Savonnerie and Aubusson

Designers use Savonnerie and Aubusson rugs and carpets — from antique quality to affordable reproductions — as the foundations for beautifully designed interiors. For over 350 years, these floor coverings have been considered to be among the finest examples of carpet production undertaken in Europe.

The Savonnerie carpet factory, located on the site of the present Musee d’Art Moderne, inherited its name from the soap-making factory it took over at the command of Louis XIII. Savonnerie pile rugs and carpets were commissioned and specifically designed for the Royal Palaces.

In the 1770s, the tapestry looms at Aubusson, in the Creuze Valley near Limoges, were converted to produce flat-woven rugs and carpets under royal warrant.

No one knows precisely when carpet weaving began in these areas, but it is certain that tapestries were first woven there long before the Gothic era.

Contact revitaRUGS to Clean Your Savonnerie And Aubusson Rugs

Our technology may be 21st century, but gentle, effective rug cleaning goes back in our family for decades, beginning in Italy.

Today, we’re proud to bring Europe’s most celebrated way to clean and care for your Aubusson and Savonnerie rugs to your neighborhood.

Your treasured floor covering will begin its journey with our organic wash process: It is thoroughly inspected and photographed using high-density cameras. The fibers are scrutinized under a digital microscope to identify pollutants and foreign material. The rug then goes through a dusting machine with special filtration to prevent dust particles from resettling back into the rug.

The soaps we use are mild, perfume- and dye-free. We only use soft water, which is laboratory filtered. It’s applied with the exact amount of pressure using a computer-controlled system that automatically allows for varied rug thicknesses. Cleaning and rinsing take place at the same time to avoid oversaturation, and fringe is hand washed.

The majority of moisture content is removed immediately in a pre-drying stage. The rug is brushed with a precise pressure-controlled brushing machine. The last stage of drying takes place in custom engineered drying rooms, which produce ideal drying conditions, with no allowance for mold or mildew.

After drying, fringes are re-checked and the rug is inspected for any necessary repairs according to the customer’s requests.

A final inspection takes place in which the rug is photographed and another round of automatic pressure controlled brushing brings it back to life.
