What Defines an Authentic Persian Rug?

Persian rugs are highly treasured and many consider them a symbol of luxury and taste.

Since Persia is modern day Iran, for a rug to be considered Persian, it must only be from Iran – nowhere else. Also, rugs that are called “Oriental” should not be confused with Persian rugs.

Authentic Persian rugs are made of wool, wool with silk blend or 100% silk. Wool is most common, and silk rugs are the most expensive. They are hand-knotted with designs and motifs that are unique to each region, city and village. Persian carpets include both pile rugs and flat weaves (such as kilim and soumak).

Furthermore, only the highest quality natural dyes are used; the rugs are created with designs that have been around for centuries; and an authentic rug’s color and pattern should be as bright and distinct on the back as it is on the front.

Persian rugs are typically tightly woven. The Persians base their unit of measure on the “raj” or about 7 cm. Most, but not all, of the best rugs have a square knot construction or the same number of knots in both width and length. Below is a basic chart converting raj to knots per square inch.

Raj     KPSI

40      210

50      329

60      473

70      675

Contact revitaRUGS For Persian Carpet Care.

A Persian rug is beautiful and expensive. As with anything described with those assets, it should be cared for and maintained in such a manner as to retain those attributes. Persian rug cleaning, or any handmade rug cleaning for that matter, should be done utilizing a process that is aimed at the specifics of each rug’s particular origin. Wool fiber, 100% silk fiber or a combination of the two are all treated and cared for differently.

In our Persian rug cleaning process, the combination of two qualities has proven to obtain superb results:  science and purity.

The Science: Each rug is thoroughly inspected and photographed using high-density cameras. Then rug fibers are inspected under a high-powered laboratory-grade microscope to identify spot pollutants, and foreign material.

The Purity: The first step in our cleaning of a Persian rug is to have an air-filtered removal of loose dust, dirt and debris.  The soft water used is micro filtered and combined with gentle organic soaps. This thorough, organic wash process applies gentle pressure using a computer-controlled system, which automatically adjusts for varied rug piles or thicknesses. Rinsing and cleaning are taking place at the same time to avoid oversaturation, and fringe is hand washed.

We will remove the majority of moisture content immediately in our proprietary pre-drying system. The last stage of drying takes place in our fully enclosed custom engineered temperature controlled drying room, which produces ideal filtered air-drying conditions.
