H1: INTERIOR DESIGN SPOTLIGHT: Suzanne Tucker, Tucker & Marks, San Francisco, California

We’ve profiled her interior design firm, and now Suzanne Tucker took a moment from her international business travels to talk to professional rug cleaning company revitaRUGS about an “area” close to both of our hearts.

RR: Do you have any favorite area rugs stories?

ST: One of my greatest challenges was convincing a client – who was repelled by the thought of someone’s feet having trampled on an “old” rug – to buy an antique carpet. Eventually I prevailed, but I practically had to perform an exorcism on the rug to get out any old “juju.” 🙂

RR: Do you have a favorite type of area rug that you recommend most to clients?

ST: I am very much drawn to vintage and antique rugs, such as this mid-twentieth century Moroccan rug I placed in the 2007 San Francisco Decorator Showcase and this early-twentieth-century Khotan carpet from the same showcase. Khotans have a lot of character and work so well as accents in hallways, vestibules, and on either side of the bed. You can build a room around them by pairing and layering them. Another recent favorite is this Swedish half pile rug from Doris Leslie Blau (circa 1940) I used in the 41st Annual Marin Designers’ Showcase.

Incorporating something old and beautiful into a room transforms it in a subtle way and gives a welcomed tension between the old and new. It doesn’t have to be over the top expensive, but I find that an antique piece resonates differently in a room, whispering with history’s silent voices. The appeal resides in a patina only achievable with time; their very imperfections speak to me of character and life lived and gives a room a depth of soul.

RR: What part do area rugs play in your design vision in general?

ST: Rugs are essential to a room’s “soul” – they anchor the seating arrangements and pathways, grounding the space with texture and color.

RR: Tell us why you favor area rugs.

ST: We should all live in homes that entice and delight our senses, and every room in the house can incorporate seductive elements that not only please the eye, but also the touch the ear – in fact, I often use carpets and rugs to achieve nuanced variations in the acoustics of each room and each home.

RR: Not everyone can afford to work with a designer, especially one of your caliber. Would you offer some tips to those who would like to redecorate a room using an area rug they already have?

ST: I would say that a thoughtful edit is always a good frame of mind. Less isn’t always more; the key is balance… and color, texture and materials. Focus on a handful of items you feel very strongly about and build out your room from there. Definitely go for quality over quantity, buy the best you can afford and don’t feel like you have to complete a space all at once.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the creative process of expressing your personality and putting your individual stamp on a space. And as far as rugs go: size does matter…more specifically: scale and proportion. Be generous, don’t skimp on size and put a postage stamp on the floor. Watch where rugs start and stop at walkways, so you aren’t walking onto the corner of a rug.

RR: Thanks for your time. Why don’t you leave our readers with the Suzanne Tucker design philosophy.

ST: Our design philosophy is to put together timeless pieces, old and new, a play of line, pattern and form, and to create personalized homes that speak of our client’s lives and passions – environments that our clients are truly proud to call home.
